Centre for Inclusive Cricket, Worcester, UK 2019

Our proposal for the Centre for Inclusive Cricket at University of Worcester puts inclusivity and accessibility at the heart of the design. Roughly square in plan, the new building extends beyond the line of the existing arena presenting a highly visible corner entrance which is landscaped to create a covered public space and mediate changes in level.

Externally the building is visually striking and plays on associations with cricket structures. The folded roof is a result of the technical requirements of bringing natural light into the cricket spaces and projects beyond the facade to create a strong profile. The underside is lined with timber, bringing a sense of warmth. Cricket is visually associated with green and white - which play a key role in the external appearance and internal palette.

The plan has been designed around the central space which continues the line of the approach road from the entrance. Having past reception, visitors can immediately see all the spaces on offer within the building. The cricket nets are located to the left and can be seen and easily accessed, while facilities such as debriefing and teaching rooms are arranged along the right side. A viewing gallery to the nets is provided on both ground and first floors. The interior spaces are bright and open and all facilities have been designed considering the needs of players of all abilities.
