Gardener’s Workshop, Hepworth Wakefield gallery, Yorkshire, UK 2017

The Gardener's Workshop at the Hepworth Wakefield has been conceived in collaboration with Eco-Classrooms - a company specialising in flexible modular off-site construction. Conceptually we see the project as part of a sequence of potential new garden structures at Wakefield including the new play area for children.  These, we feel, should create a "thread" through the Riverfront Gallery Garden by sharing formal and material qualities. To achieve this, our proposal is for a simple horizontal timber pavilion sitting gently in its garden context. We have also been careful to preserve and frame views of the David Chipperfield designed Hepworth Wakefield gallery.  Timber, with its warm and natural character is envisaged as the finishing material both inside and outside the workshop. The aim is for a pavilion with a pared-down and well-crafted atmosphere.
