The project involves providing an extension to the existing Victorian Lodge at the entrance to the cemetery and also a shelter for mourners to wait in prior to attending a service. The new structure is designed to mediate between the Lodge building and the Arcadian setting of the cemetery beyond. A gently curving bench creates a calm space for mourners to gather in groups, with pools of natural light falling from the lanterns above. Timber shingles are used externally, emphasising the overall sculptural form and sitting comfortably with the highly textured context. The extension provides meeting and other support spaces for the Lodge and the internal public-facing spaces will also be refurbished. Our aim has been to create an atmosphere that is conducive to reflection while also revealing the beauty of the natural setting.
