Banja Luka Congress Centre, Bosnia and Herzegovina 2020

Our competition entry for the Banja Luka Congress Centre conceives the building as a finely-tuned instrument, with its elegant external form expressive of the performance venues within. The building announces its presence through its dynamic curved roof. Moving closer, the visitor can read its key components – two large concert halls linked by a transparent curve of glass.

Inside a single space unites all the activities within the building, creating a dynamic ‘urban room’ in which people can gather. Flooded with natural light, the space is multi-level and intuitive to navigate, allowing visitors to orientate themselves, meet their friends and move towards their destination. The three main venues – a 1500-seat concert hall, 700-seat theatre and 200-seat small concert hall - are all arrayed along this space.

Central to our proposals are three halls of exceptional quality. Each has been tuned to its particular purpose and enveloped in warm timber panels. Subtle differences in expression give an individual character to each of the halls. The main theatre shells use concrete while the circulation space is defined by an innovative timber structure. Areas of glazing have been carefully positioned in order to avoid over-heating and the building benefits from the thermal mass of the concrete. The building’s roof houses photovoltaics and landscaped pocket-parks at ground level provide enjoyable outdoor spaces open to all.
