The Chicago Architecture Biennial held a design contest for lakeside kiosks. As a small building, the kiosk is a demonstration of the sensual impact of architecture in miniature. We named our entry to the contest ‘Chicago Bonsai’. The lower part of the ‘Chicago Bonsai’ structure functions as a kiosk, while the upper part supports two citrus trees. The kiosk reconfigures throughout the year and even provides the trees with the shelter they require from the elements in colder months. The design celebrates and heightens awareness of the changing seasons.
