Play, Hepworth Wakefield gallery, Yorkshire, UK 2017

We worked on a proposal for a play area for the Hepworth Wakefield gallery in West Yorkshire. The brief was to design a stimulating environment for children relating to both the landscape of the gallery’s riverside garden and works of art by Barbara Hepworth. The site borders the River Calder and the Hepworth Wakefield designed by David Chipperfield Architects. At present, the site lacks definition and a sense of shelter comfortable for children. Our proposal focuses on a terrain that doubles as a secure landscape for children to inhabit and a structure conducive to imaginative play.  We believe an interactive landscape is more in keeping with the gallery’s mission to encourage inspiration and dialogue than a conventional children’s play area with prescriptive play equipment.  The amphitheatre like quality of our scheme would also house "cabins" for use as workshops or simply places to hide in or play house. In good weather, the stepped seated form of the play area encourages outdoor activities like drawing or storytelling.
