Our design for County Theatre focuses on the integrity of the existing Art Deco style building dating from 1938 and its interrelationship with new additions. A new external courtyard has a pivotal role in mediating between the two and creating an outdoor space for people to enjoy. The clarity and simplicity of the new building refers to its precedent in its composition but does not set out to replicate the Art Deco features of the original cinema. As part of the design, the lobby has been expanded from the original building and around the courtyard so that it now benefits from natural light. The façade of the addition uses red pigmented concrete, complementing the existing brick buildings of the historic town centre.
