SURGE’s mission is to present work by China’s emerging artists. Located on a skybridge in Steven Holl’s MOMA building, the gallery design provides a kit of playful elements that can be reconfigured depending on the requirements of each show. By using commonly available and inexpensive materials, the space was transformed at a modest cost yet the result is an inviting and generous sequence of sculptural pieces designed to interact with the general public.
Construction was completed in 2014.
