Our project for a new Youth Zone in Thurrock, Essex has received Planning Consent. The youth centre will provide young people with opportunities to engage in a wide range of activities including a dance space, recording studio, arts and crafts area, a sports hall, fitness suite and climbing wall. It will be open to young people aged between eight and 19, and up to 25 for those with additional needs, seven days a week.
Carefully designed for its setting, the building and landscape design are closely integrated. Set back from the road, the building sits diagonally across the corner, forming a new public space at its entrance. The building’s taller spaces are located adjacent to the entrance, creating a taller volume. Clad in warm, yellow-coloured boards and gently curving at the corners, this part of the building is visible in long-views, establishing a landmark for young people to identify with.
