Vicarage Road Chapel

Hertfordshire, UK

2020

We were commissioned by Watford Borough Council to revive Vicarage Road Cemetery Chapel – now deconsecrated – for re-use as a community workspace and arts studio. The building is locally listed and sits in enjoyable landscaped grounds.

The project included a bespoke new entrance within the existing archway. The new door and surrounding fixed panels are largely made from glass to allow natural light and views into the building while maintaining thermal comfort. Horizontal bronze elements pick-up on lines within the surrounding stonework while verticals at the centre relate to the partitioning of the existing timber doors, which can be closed at night for additional security. The bronze material and detailing give a jewellery-like quality to the design.

Internally, the main chapel space has been refurbished with new lighting and simple materials to create a flexible studio environment.

Bronze detailing helps the new contemporary door sit sympathetically with the heritage architecture of the chapel.
